ALTERA-GENESIS
1900 years in the future. Human nature never changes. Humanity has expanded across the stars, finding new places to inhabit and building for themselves new homes.
“By nature, humans are a species known for wanting more even when their desires and necessities are contented. Humans' drive to acquire the excess of all attainable needs is in direct opposition to their acceptance of the barest minimum. “ – Rakos Ofdin, 34 E.F.O. (Exodus from Earth)
A long time ago, humans – homo sapiens – had ravaged their home planet of Earth. Digging deep and tapping deep deposits of resources centuries in the making. They prospered for a time but it was a sheer cliff of circumstance as society squandered and wasted what they had gained. It was inevitable that life sustained land was destroyed and the whole biosphere of Terra Firma was ripped apart. Ignorance. Apathy. Atittudes that focused on HAVING and ENJOYING, had turned the blue planet dark.
Everyone struggled to survive, fighting each other to keep what they had and gaining more, but it was unsustainable. To those with means and foresight, they knew the Earth was doomed and the human race with it. Without hope, the leaders, the affluent, and the powerful bought their tickets to Mars, abandoning their desecrated home. They escaped, refusing to deal with a failing biosphere and leaving behind the dregs, but what they assumed was a wise choice would later have historians describe as their biggest mistake.
The remnant of humanity left on Earth managed to recover through years of perserverance and and evolution, both technological and biological. In time, miracles of ingenuity and nature led to a once again thriving population until IT happened.
A rift in the universe, an Einsten-Rosen Bridge, a worm hole opened up and those who bore witness saw that it led to a a parallel universe. Fearing that the Martians would return to exploit this opportunity and the scarcity of resources, the human remnant sent out arkships into the great unknown and there they discovered: ALTERA.
These pioneer, the Fetari, found new homes and were fruitful, multipling their holdings in this alternate dimension. Settlements would arise with both the Fetari and native peoples co-habitating with each other. Altera brought about a New Age of Prosperity and by recruiting talents far and wide, dangerous, alien worlds became habitable. The Great Restart of the Fetari began and once the most basic needs were met, the colonists began giving into their desires.
The colonists quantum leaped into a vast ocean of change, evolving and settling throughout the universe. Some acted as expansions of new nations, some as agents of megacorporations, while others were those seeking to claim a home just for themselves. The first major power to firmly establish themselves were the Tundari Empire, governing for centuries and ensuring order would reign in Altera. In pursuit of security, it controlled and tracked practically every facet of life in the empire. In the lives people led, in the resources they produced and consumed, and all creative expressions until it all began to collapse.
It split into 3 lesser factions - Ondreia, Plume, and Myrian— that could never reconcile. With newfound freedom, all three empires renewed a spirit of fierce competition but conflict was brewing. As each of these empires increased its power throughout the cosmos, the Martian Supremacists began plotting to rule over the galaxy and take every available resource.
The magnificently perfect civilization, which was at the pinnacle of development and had instilled a lavish lifestyle in its citizens, was now the focus of political unrest and turmoil. On the surface, what appeared to be warm hearted competition and interaction was in fact a subtle ploy to seize power over Altera.
Mars was now the epicenter of social upheaval, and the people were gradually losing the strong sense of unity they had shared when Altera was being built as their new home. Once more, humanity was trapped in a web of ambiguous circumstances, and like the destiny of Earth, it now appeared that Mars' future will likewise be uncertain.
